Obituary of Shirley Wright

Shirley Gloria Brown Wright was born on May 20, 1936 to the late Kendrick Brown and Gladys Preston in Harlem, New York. Her father was from Antiqua, a place she always wanted to visit.

She attended New York Public Schools and college. She became fluent in Spanish. While in school, she met the love of her life, Arthur George Wright, known as George. They married on October 20, 1955 and from this Union was born a son, Derek. Sadly, both have previously passed.

Shirley was a Claims Rep for the Social Security Administration for several years at the Freeport Office. Many claimants received one on one attention because of Shirley's love for her people.

Shirley loved the theater, traveling to Martha's Vineyard and to City Island. This brought her great happiness.

She loved hearing from young people about their personal, professional and educational achievements. She placed a high value on Family. Coming from a small family, she "adopted" two young women, Deborah and Charmaine, as her "daughters". This strong relationship has remained to the end.

In 2010, Shirley was honored as an Unsung Hero" for her work at the Westbury Senior Center and the community. She was a weekly volunteer for the Adult Day Care Group. She was able to help the frail and elderly members of the community and senior center to participate in on-going activities. She extended a helping hand, became true friends and an advocate for those who needed support and reassurance.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, and her mother-in-law.

She leaves to treasure her memory her niece, Margaret, her nephew, Vernon, cousin Florence, cherished friend Terry, senior center partner, Lois, daily home health aide, Saba, hosts of friends and Kitty the cat, a loyal companion.
