Obituary of Irwin W. Hinds
Irwin (Trevor) Washington McNeil Hinds was born on February 12th, 1947, in Saint Catherine, Jamaica to his parents Kenneth and Alma Hinds. He was the fifth child out of seven children. He was always an obedient child and loved all his brothers and sisters. Irwin was known as the “peacekeeper”. As a young man he was very popular, charming, had many friends, loved sports, and took after his father for being a man of “no non-sense”.
Irwin attended Goshen Primary School in Saint Mary. He then went to Saint Andrew Technical High School. Following High School, his brother Keith known as “twin” introduced him to the Jamaica Defense Force. He served the force for nine years. After, serving he started his career with Brinks Jamaica Limited for fourteen years. During his time at Brinks he met Edel Cunningham, and their relationship conceived his first daughter Stacia Okoh.
While working at Brinks, he met his soul mate Monica Cole. He was captivated by Monica’s beauty, smile, physique, and sense of style. After many attempts he won her heart over. They fell in love and got married December 14th, 1977. Within their union they had three beautiful daughters Karla-Jo Hinds, Jodi-Ann Hinds and Lisa-Gail Hinds. Irwin and Monica migrated to the United States in 1987. He started his career in electrical and plumbing first working at Pergament and then working for Home Depot for 20 years. While at Home Depot Irwin was a coach, mentor, a charismatic leader, punctual, customer oriented and welcoming to all. Most importantly customers and co-workers always looked forward every day to seeing his smile, getting a fist bump, hearing his words of wisdom, and teachings of life lessons.
Irwin had a love for gardening. Every year he looked forward to planting his flowers, and most importantly his tomatoes, cucumbers, and callaloo. He took pride in boasting about his vegetables and fruits. He loved sharing them amongst his family and friends and enjoyed keeping his house and yard immaculate.
Irwin enjoyed cooking and enjoyed debates on who was the better cook out of him and Monica. Playing music, watching sports, traveling, laughing and dancing. Irwin had a love for fashion and if you truly knew him, you knew that he took a special liking to Nike Air Force Ones. Irwin will always be remembered as a man of values, morals, discipline, and class. He did not like bickering nor quarrelling. His favorite line was “that is foolishness” Irwin always embodied the importance of family and sticking together no matter what.
He is survived by his loving wife Monica Hinds, his daughter Stacia Okoh, her husband Jonathan Okoh Sr, grandchildren Jonathan Okoh Jr, and Jace Okoh.
