Obituary of Lurena Smith
Lurena Smith, affectionately known as “Reet” and “Nana” by her grandchildren, was born on March 18, 1928 to Henderson McTier and Effie Newton McTier, in Baxley, GA, the third of 3 sisters of this union. She transitioned from this life on Sunday June 9, 2024 at the age of 96.
Lurena grew up in what is known as the “McTier” settlement and attended Appling County Public Schools in Baxley, GA. At a young age Lurena joined Rachel Missionary Baptist Church, a church founded by her grandfather, and remained a faithful member of Rachel until she transferred her membership to Faith Baptist Church under Rev. Joseph J. Howell.
Lurena left Baxley and moved to Brooklyn, NY as a young woman. It was here she met and later married Fernie Smith on September 29, 1951. The marriage lasted until his passing in December 1992. Two children were born of this union, Janet Smith Weathers and Dwayne R. Smith.
Lurena worked as a meat wrapper for the bulk of her working life and continued to do so when the family moved to Roosevelt in September 1970. After working, she later assisted with the raising of her grandchildren until they were in school. After the passing of her husband, Lurena worked/volunteered at Uniondale Early Childhood Center.
Lurena was fiercely independent, vibrant, stylish and unconditionally loving. She loved time spent with family and friends and loved to tell stories about her youth and growing up. Her kind heart, radiant smile and indomitable spirit left a mark upon all fellow travelers in her life’s journey.
She was the last of her siblings and leaves to cherish her precious memory her children Janet (Michael Weathers) and Dwayne. She also leaves 3 grandchildren, Shaun (Christina) and Anika and Kyleaka; 3 great-granddaughters Michaela, Maya and Naomi and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and dear friends. May her soul enrich the kingdom of heaven and may her love forever endure in the hearts and minds of those that cherished her.
