We love you, “Billye & Joe”! Our sincere condolences to this wonderful and lovely family. We have fond memories of sharing “Our Place in St. Thomas”! Extended family, guests, friends, call us what you like, but we thoroughly enjoyed visiting with you in STT. Joe, may you rest in peace and know that you and Billye are loved by so many.

Not the Average Joe
The average Joe will come and go
and one might not take notice
Of What he's doing
what he's wearing
Or how he crafts
the words he sharing
His appearance,
makes no difference .
Unlike, the Joe we know.
The average Joe blends into the crowd
he keeps to himself, and if he's allowed
he may take a wife
just as average as he
and the average pair birth
the average family .
Unlike our Joseph Mayo
Joe would enter a room and turn every head
All of us looked up to him!
His stature alone would catch every eye
When he spoke ,every ear leaned in.
Picture this couple in juxtaposition
She is the chef and he the musician
The talent he shared with the world is abundant:
a designer, an artist and veritable pundit !
His opinion is valued
His advice freely given
And I listened to him ,
Saw the life he was livin
While Billye and he would prepare for the day
I took great delight in the words they would say
It was the "'Billye and Joe Show "every morning
more than once said to them" let's get the cameras rolling!"
The costume he crafted with sequins on fringe
The drumsticks he'd bring to the beach
The five or six braids he would put in his beard
All the grandchildren longed to reach
Two wonderful daughters were born to this union of wonderful people in kind
Billye ,so regal ! Her beauty unmatched
And our Joe was one of a kind!
Everyone that knew him loved and respected the man from Brooklyn,NewYork!
He was head and shoulders above most men and that is not just metaphor !
Every April he grew even taller,
All recognized the stilt -walking sage
As large as he loomed , he commanded respect as walked through the carnival stage.
A protector at heart, even though not my father, he made me feel safe in his care. (He kindly suggested I put on more clothing while performing on the island down there)
We laughed and I changed, heeding his advice because I knew that he cared.
I'll never forget the Mayo memories with whom I was blessed to share!
Love and respect to you, Joe Mayo
you have gone the way all of us must go.
I gladly give honor
to my island father
most definitely,
not the average Joe.

What a wonderful time was had with Billye & Joe! Joe’s presence on earth will be missed. He taught us how to stretch in life & do new unimaginable things even as we age. (Mocko Jombie, learning to play the drums, travel, computer art, etc). He had no fear. I recall a poem that Kierna wrote about her parents on their 40th anniversary. It started with “Billye & Joe, that’s one word you know.” They definitely knew how to couple. Billye you have a circle of love and support around you. Kierna and Kadiesha you were blessed with a wonderful father, & grandfather to your kids. Keeping you all in prayer for comfort & strength during this time.

Kierna Mayo has been my sister Malika Iles best friend since forever. Kierna is like my sister. The Mayo family is wonderful. Kierna told me her dad had a shop and he makes leather goods. I always had to have a special outfit for my birthday. I wanted a nice pair of leather pants. I designed a pair of pants and Mr. Mayo was impressed by my design. He made those leather pants for me and nobody could tell me anything about my leather pants. You couldn’t find them in the store. They were a Mr. Mayo original design. I was proud as a peacock. Everyone asked me where did you get these pants? I said Mr. Mayo made these for me!! He took the time with me as if I spend hundreds of dollars. I was so happy. Rest easy Mr. Mayo. Love You AKILAH

Joe my brother, my only regret is that I didn’t meet you earlier in my life. You would always say we only have the day we are in. The many times after a day at the beach, we would embrace and say this was a good day. In the end our memories are all we can keep. I cherish those moments we shared close to my heart. Rest well my beloved brother, we will meet again. Eternal Love - Mark

As a toddler my daughter would only go to or let my father or her uncles pick her up. King Joe and Billy will always be a part of our family. When told of the kings passing his little beach buddy broke down and cried and only asked one question..” when can we go see him?” Joe, you will forever have a place in Leilani’s heart and forever in ours. One love
